Recovering riparian habitat at Hansen Dam
This photo shows wildflowers growing in areas previously dominated by dense, impenetrable Arundo. The short black stubs are remnants of dead Arundo stalks that were sprayed with herbicide last year. Where tall stalks could not be sprayed last year, post-fire Arundo resprouts are being sprayed before growing taller than 5 to 8 feet, although some reached 15 feet. Resprouting willow trees are currently about 5 to 8 feet tall, whereas cottonwood resprouts are 1 to 2 feet tall.
