Wednesday, March 20, 2013, 9 a.m.: Short field outing to Santa Fe Dam: Santa Fe Dam is always the best wildflower display in L.A. County this time of year. Leader Jane Strong (zelicaon [AT] yahoo [DOT] com).

Directions: From S. Irwindale Ave., go west on W. 1st Street. Left (south) on Peckham to the end and park. Walk south to intersection with the park road, where we meet at 9 a.m. The outing will last 2 hours. Restrooms at the Nature Center.

Walt Fidler visited Santa Fe Dam on March 14, and his report gives an indication of what's in bloom now. His partial list includes ground pink (Linanthus dianthiflorus), sun cup (Camissoniopsis bistorta), and Solanum xantii. Also occasional blooms of Dichelostemma capitatum, Mirabilis californica, Clematis, Rhus ovata, Eriodictyon trichocalyx, Marah macrocarpus, Phacelia distans, Lathyrus vestitus, Salvia mellifera, Deerweed (previously Lotus scoparius), and Ribes aureum (mostly going to fruit).
